Good morning my friends! The days have been passing quickly here since the holidays, and not all of them are filled with news-y events. Sometimes, the more eventful days are too busy for me to post on!
Friday I had to have some kind of filter replaced on my car. There went $400 in the blink of an eye. The "check engine soon" light came on and that was the fix for it, so painfully, I passed over the cash and that was that. No more light. I have to say though, I sat for about an hour while they diagnosed the problem and then when they told me that they had to get the part, but they could fix it later in the day, they gave me a rental car so I could get on with my day.
I believe Keith had a nice birthday. We have done a great job of eating at home this whole week, but I told him earlier on in the week that he would get to pick the place we would go out for his birthday. He chose Outback (I was disappointed that he didn't want to go to the Melting Pot, but that will be for MY birthday :)). I made him a cake and we had that at home after dinner and he opened his presents, a new video game, a cook book and a book about dads and daughters that I saw while I was shopping for the cook book.
Yesterday we had "R's" family over for dinner at 6. I made lasagna in the infamous humongoloid green pan that I received for my first Mother's Day. I commented on my friend Val's blog that it probably weighed 30 lbs for the 7 of us by the time I was done, but we put a good dent in it. It was funny because I called another friend around the corner while I was shopping and asked her if she wanted some because I knew I would have leftovers. The Panthers playoff game started at 8, so she told me to come watch with her when company left.
So, after a great meal and dessert, the kids went to play the Wii and left the adults to talk. "R" is going to be moving in with us next weekend to finish out the school year here. Her family is moving in with another family member until things can get situated in FL, so hopefully this will give everyone some peace in some ways. I know Hannah is excited. "R" has said she is excited, but she's probably nervous too even though she had no apprehensions about it last night. They have to be out of their house by Feb. 1st so moving in next weekend will give her a chance to get situated before everyone leaves and her parents will still be here to take care of last minute things we haven't thought of.
I'm probably nuts for getting myself into a situation where a 16 year old girl is coming to live in my guest room, but we love this girl and feel like it's the right thing to do on many levels. I have a lot of fond memories of 10th grade and it would have been devastating to move in the middle of that school year. I really feel like it was the first year I started to feel like "myself", if that makes any sense. I also have painfully acute memories of Hannah's move just a month and a half into the school year here, but 25% of the way through the school year in Florida when we moved here. How that entire year was a wreck and the year following because of (well, because of a lot of things, but...) not getting to start at day one with her classmates. She just was expected to know how things were done and that was it. It effected her self-esteem horribly and took her a long time to adjust to the move because of the situation at school.
The "plus" side of this though, is that she doesn't have to stay here, we don't have to allow it. If she doesn't behave and keep her grades up, she knows she will have to join her family in Florida. For that fact, I think she will be okay for the 4 months here. Hopefully we will get her back into cheer because that will be 3 evenings out of the week that she and Hannah will have something going on together. With Hannah dropping rock climbing on Friday nights, that just leaves horseback riding (which we are trying to swap the time for), so it will work out. She lives around the 1/2 way point to horseback riding right now, so I told her I'd be happy to drop her at a friend's house out that way while Hannah and I were out there (as long as we get the timing worked out for the lesson).
When they left at 9:30, Hannah had standing plans to get over to "B's" house for a sleepover. I dropped her off and headed to my friend's house in the neighborhood here with the lasagna and stayed through the end of the Panthers/Cardinals game that we didn't really watch, just had on in the background while we chatted. Good thing I'm not really invested in football or the loss last night would have been very depressing.
I have to go pick up Hannah at 11. Keith's still sleeping. I have to say, about my sleeping habits, that I've been doing much better in a lot of ways. True, I have been up late some nights, unable to fall asleep, but I have been getting up consistently at 7 since school started again. I am going to the doctor for my physical tomorrow afternoon so I am going to finally figure out what is going on with me. At least that's my hope.
