The floating bandstand

The bandstand

These are the "apartments" I stayed in as a child for several weeks during the summer. My great grandmother rented the ones to the left, overlooking the bandstand and public dock, my grandparents rented the ones on the right overlooking the roller skating rink. The building now houses a real estate office and florist.

This used to be a roller skating rink I would go to several times a week. It burned down a few years ago and was replaced by a condominium complex of the same dimensions. The condos are selling for $750,000.

The post office: it wasn't all that long ago that my mom used to be able to write to me, just my name, the city and state - no address, and the post office would hold letters for me. All I had to do was ask at the counter if I had any mail. This wasn't uncommon.

View across Alton Bay of the "apartment" and the "skating rink", taken from Harmony Park ("the beach")

We used to watch for the Mount Washington to come in to dock. We never rode on it, my great-grandmother said it was "too expensive". For a two hour trip the cost is now $25.

We walked around Weirs Beach just for a bit, then headed to Kellerhaus for the make it yourself ice cream sundae buffet

It was actually raining down near the lake where we were staying, but on Tuesday, we went to the alpine slide in the White Mountains and had nice weather.

The Alpine Slide!

Fun on the waterslides

On the way back to our motel on the lake, we stopped in Wolfeboro to go to the Yum Yum Shop. This is where my great-grandmother would take me for fig squares, muffins, and fresh raisin bread.

On Wed we went to Castle in the Clouds and walked around the house and grounds.

Using the boat as an umbrella to go next door to see what Nana and Aunt Katie are going to do for the evening. Sad, sad, sad... We ended up watching TV all together. It was fun, but not what we had planned for our long anticipated vacation.

My mom and Katie at the Squam Lake Natural Science Center on Thurs. Of course, it's raining.

Friday: at last a BEAUTIFUL day! We spent time in the chilly lake with the bright sun. Keith caught over 40 crayfish, about 25 minnows and around 25 little catfish with his snorkle and net.
Stopping for one last scenic photo on the drive back to the airport.
