I think I shall never see

something more aggravating than the debate over a tree.

A neighbor came to the door today, flyer in hand. She's on the community advisory board. Anyway, it appears we have two little trees that the previous owners planted illegally. A crepe myrtle and maybe a Japanese maple? Not entirely sure as it was naked when we arrived.

Anyway, it appears that the developer and builders were supposed to put a hardwood in every front yard, 30 ft. apart, 3 feet from the curb (but not more than 15 feet). Since they didn't do it, and the fee for planting the tree was included in the lot premium paid by the previous owners, we get to choose from 4 trees that a professional landscaper will put in the yard.

I was taken aback. I really like the crepe myrtle. It was a little reminder of our old house in Lakeland (and I have been praying it is the same dark pink). When we bought the house I couldn't figure out why we had a dead thing as a focal point in the middle of the yard, then it bloomed! :) That little chuckle has made me fond of the bare winter trees. Anyway, I don't know if they are going to tell me to rip it out or not. The board member said we need to have a feeling of consistency in the neighborhood.

The choices are: October Glory Maple, Red Sunset Maple, Willow Oak, or Nuttall Oak. Oak pollen about kills me when they bloom. I am leaning towards the maple, but don't know how knotty the roots are. If they will be sticking up out of the lawn once it gets bigger? Anyone know? We can forego the tree altogether, but doing so would undoubtedly bring the wrath of the homeowners association.

What do you think?

I think oak trees grow faster and have much bigger roots than maple. We have a maple at school and has grown at a pretty slow pace. No roots above ground that I've seen.

I can't believe that they would care about a crate mertyle--especially if you trim it every year and keep it more bush like.
