I'd be interested to hear what some of my Scottish friends like Neil, Hazel, and Hilda have to say about this: Be a Laird/Lady. I think it's pretty funny. I wonder how big the swatch of ground would be. An inch at best?

I just double checked that website and it says one square foot of land. Wow. What would I put on my one foot?
Hi Beth,
I would suspect that it's an 'innovative' way for a hard-up estate (of which there are many) to drum up some cash and tourist interest in the area (Lochaber's not one of the big international draw regions). In some ways it's no different from those plots of land on the moon you can "buy", except that you will actually own one square foot of land in Scotland. The whole 'title' thing is somewhat dubious to say the least. Laird only means "Land Owner" in Scots, it's not an aristocratic title of any kind. People who owned land in Scotland were once few and far between and even those who did had inferior land rights to the feudal "superior" who had sold it.
I suppose it's a fun thing to do, but from a Highland cultural perspective, given our horrendous injustices over land tenure and clearances in the past, there are ethical questions. Hazel probably has much better knowledge of the estate stuff than I, though.
Yeah, I wasn't getting ready to input my credit card number. I just thought it was funny. The whole "you can find anything on the internet these days" mantra.
